“Barron Produce” supplies fresh mushrooms to markets, retailers and restaurants/café’s on the Tablelands and Cairns. Whilst the business currently concentrates on the wholesale of Shiitake Mushroom, many other revenue streams are possible including the sale of growing kits, running workshops on Mushroom cultivation, sale of mushroom compost and the production and sale of spawn and cultures.
Barron Produce is one of only a few large scale Mushroom farm in operation in FNQ which has the ability to supply Mushrooms 12 months of the year. The ability to produce mushrooms all year around lies with its unique location in Upper Barron where temperatures are generally mild all year around. The ability to supply for 12 months year is a competitive advantage as it ensures a continued supply of fresh mushrooms to customers whom would have to alternatively source them from the Brisbane Markets or further afield.
Currently only producing Shiitake mushrooms, the following types of mushrooms have been successfully cultivated on the farm previously:
Shiitake
King Oyster (Eryngii)
Oyster
Pioppino
Enoki
Reishi
Milky Mushroom
Straw mushroom
The farm is run by 1 person whom averages 20 hours on mushroom cultivating activities. Current operations have been scaled back to accommodate the time the current owner is able to devote to the business which generates a production of around 30 kg/week.
Opportunities to increase the supply of Shiitake mushrooms is tremendous with only minimal effort currently put into marketing the product in the Tablelands & Cairns area.
Interest has been expressed in getting the product into the Townsville region however the owner’s over commitment has prevented this from being achieved.
A full time operator could conservatively yield 160 – 200 kg per week if the full capacity of the growing complex was utilised. An average yield of 180kg per week would equate to a weekly revenue figure of $4,300 per week.
Another currently unexplored revenue option for the farm is the use of the 10 “spare” acres directly behind the Mushroom cultivation precinct. Currently the land is on a quarterly rolling lease for agistment however opportunities are available to run your own cattle or even crop the land with options available for horticulture (avocado’s, peaches ect) and regular cropping. A riparian water license is attached to the property currently however there is 20 mg water available for lease which the owner has access to should it be of interest.
Further sources of revenue are possible through the rental of the 6 bedroom accommodation.
